Lock and Chain Symbolism

What do the chains represent?

While the chains are used as our main PR tool and often visible throughout campus, the true meaning of the lock and chain is part of the tradition and history of the organization, known only to its members.
Top

Are those chains heavy?

Yes, at first. But you get used to it rather quickly.
Top

What do the nouns mean?

As with the chains, the nouns given to each member of Lock and Chain represent part of the bond which holds us so closely together: our secrecy.
Top

Why do you wear your chains during the year?

There are two reasons we wear the chains throughout the year: to announce the new class or to advertise a Lock and Chain event that day. Any time you see a member of Lock and Chain wearing his chain, take a moment to find out why.

What if I want to apply to Lamda Sigma as well?

You are, of course, able to apply for membership in any organization on campus. However, the interview process for Lock and Chain is binding after a certain point. If you are invited back to this round (TBD) and would like to continue, you must withdraw your application to any other honorary on campus, including that of Lamda Sigma. It is not possible to be a member of both Sophomore Honoraries.

How do I benefit from selling my books through Lock and Chain?

  • You set your own price. That means you have the opportunity to make as much money as possible.
  • We store your books during the breaks. You won't have to haul all those heavy textbooks home over the summer or pay for storage.
  • We do the work for you. No finding a buyer, no advertising online, no paying for shipping.
  • You feel good about making a donation to a local charity.
  • The more people that sell with us, the bigger selection we have, and the more likely you are to find the books you need for the next semester.
Top

The bookstore wouldn't take my book. Can I still give it to you?

Of course! We will attempt to sell ANY book you want. Oftentimes the bookstore denies your book because the course is using a new edition, but they are usually so similar, most students would rather buy the cheapest one, even if it is a little out of date. Go for it.
Top

Why do you need my social security number on the registration form?

All of the sales are processed by Student Union. In order to send your check, they need your social security number. Leaving that field blank will greatly delay the processing of your check.
Top

How do I know how much to sell my books for?

The pricing is totally up to you, but it makes the most sense to sell it for at least $5 less than the bookstore. Check their website to see how much they will sell it for, then go just under that.
Top

Can I change the price of my book during the sale if no one has purchased it yet?

No, we're sorry. The price you have set is not negotiable and may not be changed at any time during the sale.
Top

Can someone negotiate the price of my book?

No. We will not allow someone to negotiate the price of your book during the sale. Your books will sell for the price you originally set for them or they will be returned to you at no cost.
Top

Can I turn books in during the sale, or do I have to give them to you during the collection period?

All books in the sale must be registered during the collection period. We will not accept new books during the sale.
Top

How do I know if my book has sold?

You will be emailed at the conclusion of the sale as to whether or not your book(s) were purchased. If you would like to know during the sale, you may stop by the sale and ask at the check-out table.
Top

I bought the wrong book from the sale. Can I return it?

No. There are no returns or exchanges on any purchases made at the Lock and Chain booksale, even if you drop the class.
Top

Do you accept credit cards?

No. Purchases may be made with cash or check only.
Top

Why haven't I gotten my check yet?

Once the sale is over, all purchases must be processed through Student Union. All sales will be turned over to them within a week of the conclusion of the sale, and after that, Lock and Chain has no control over the matter. Generally, the checks begin to arrive around the end of the semester. If you have heard of other students receiving their checks and yours still has not come, check at your permanent address. Some students request the check sent there without realizing it.

I forgot to pick up my books! What should I do?

Contact Lock and Chain as soon as possible. It is likely we can still return your books to you if they haven't been donated yet.
